Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any significant honors show nears, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
