Space Traveler Shares Emotional Distress Following Deluge of Online Abuse Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.
She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the edge of outer space.
